Back Door Distillery was created by a farmer and a hairdresser who chose to upcycle not just objects, but their lives.

After moving to Ōpunake, they transformed the McGreggors building into a working distillery, crafting gin and rum in small batches. Their process is hands-on, using local ingredients and careful tasting at every stage. Beyond spirits, you’ll find original paintings inspired by local landscapes and flowers, celebrating their artistic roots.

Since 2026, they have welcomed both locals and visitors, proud to share something truly New Zealand—made on the coast, with openness, skill, and a little bit of creativity in every bottle.
